If THEY could SEE ME now

Do you remember the lyrics from this old song?

Tonight at eight you shoulda seen
A chauffeur pull up in a rented limousine!
My neighbors burned! They like to die!
When I tell them who is gettin’ in and goin’ out is I!
If they could see me now,
That little gang of mine,
I’m eating fancy chow
And drinking fancy wine.
I’d like those stumble bums to see for a fact
The kind of top drawer, first rate chums I attract.
All I can say is “Wow-ee!
Looka where I am.
Tonight I landed, pow!
Right in a pot of jam.
What a set up! Holy cow!
They’d never believe it,
If my friends could see me now!
If they could see me now,
My little dusty group,
Traipsin’ ’round this million dollar chicken coop.
I’d hear those thrift shop cats say:
“Brother, get her!
Draped on a bed spread made from three kinds of fur.”
All I can say is, “Wow!
Wait till the riff an’ raff
See just exactly how
He sign this autograph.”
What a build up! Holy cow!
They’d never believe it,
If my friends could see me now!
If they could see me now
Alone with Mister V.,
Who’s waiting on me like he was a maître d’
I’d hear my buddies saying:
“Crazy, what gives?
Tonight she’s living like
The other half lives!”
To think the highest brow,
Which I must say is he,
Should pick the lowest brow,
Which there’s no doubt is me!
What a step up! Holy cow!
They’d never believe it,
If my friends could see me now!
What a step up! Holy cow!
They’d never believe it…
They’d never believe it,
If my friends could see me now

Obviously, to refer to your “friends” as low brow, a dusty group, burned neighbors and stumble bums means they must not have been people you had much respect for. Real friends rejoice in your success. They acknowledge your accomplishments and they actively participate in your life. They don’t sit back and wait for you to do something of importance or merit so they can envy you for it.

In the early 1600’s George Herbert, an English clergyman and metaphysical poet, said “Living well is the best revenge!” When I think of this song, this saying also pops into my head. I always wonder why you would think of getting back at someone or being vengeful by living well. Is this a good reason to live well? Aren’t there better reasons?

And then I wonder about the amount of negative energy this must take for the person trying to live up to it. I wonder how hurt they must have been, or still are, in order for this kind of thought to even enter their heads.

If someone is truly your friend, showing them up is not the way to keep them as friends. If it becomes important for you to project an image, perhaps even a falsehood, to your peers to show them how unimportant and insignificant they are/were in your life, that you’re happier now or doing great now that they’re not around, then you’ve only succeeded in proving how important you still think they really are.

If it is a mystery to you whether or not your friends can see you now, it only shows that these folks you’re trying so hard to impress, were never your friends to begin with. If they were, you’d know they were looking your way.

Another method of managing friendships I find odd is the “Keep your friends close but keep your enemies closer” Why pollute your life with folks that have already shown you how toxic they can be? Do you have so little going on in your Universe that having someone that doesn’t like you constantly blip on your radar is that important?

Some people will steam roll over the folks in their lives that truly do like them, in order to get noticed by the people that don’t like them.

I don’t have that kind of time to waste.

I used that George Herbert quote in my post today too! That’s funny. You know what’s not funny? When people trash you and then act like you are all sour grapes for not wanting to hang out with them. When you support the stupid decisions your friends make and then they trash you anyway, make fun of your choices, put your real friends down, and then act like you are lame because you don’t like them anymore. When you are happy for your ex when they find someone new and they still have to make it seem like you want them back when the cold hard fact is that you didn’t want them, you left them, and the person who has them now can have them with your blessing. Live Well. It’s the Best Revenge.
