by Single not Desperate
In light of the recent Match.com scare, I thought I’d write a few words about my dating strategy for staying safe. In 2006 seven women came forward with charges of rape as a result of using Match.com. I can see how this dating service would be very easy for a predator to take advantage of.
Always keep in mind that the men you’re chatting with online are strangers. You don’t know them no matter how well you read their profile page. People lie and lying on a profile page is relatively easy because it’s not face to face.
Use Google or any other search engine to find out what you can about the guy. You can put in his name and hometown or state. Check your local online county courthouse documents to see if he has been arrested lately and what he was arrested for. These are public records, they’re free and it only takes seconds to check. Find these website sources and bookmark them when you start dating. This way you won’t be tempted to blow off doing your homework before a big date.
Meet in a public place like a restaurant, roller rink or bowling alley. Always meet your date at the destination. Never let him come to your house until you are certain he’s a safe bet and you’ve checked him out.
Watch your drink! If you have to go to the restroom, order a new drink the minute you get back. I have a friend that won’t leave her drink unattended when she’s out at a bar or on a date with someone she doesn’t know. She says you just never know who will slip something into your drink trying to drug you. It’s always better to be safe, than sorry later on.
If you share a cab on the way home, drop him off first.
Carry pepper spray in your purse on every date.
Even if you aren’t suspicious, it’s always a good idea to take steps to protect yourself. He might look innocent, he might be handsome and charming and give you no indication that he’s a creep, but I can tell you that there are several famous serial killers that were gorgeous and still murderers.
Be a safe dater!
