writing to a soundtrack

Me at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA performing my 15 minutes of fame video.

There are days I will write to total silence. I read my own writing aloud on those days without distractions and without the feelings and emotions that a musical background tend to provoke. It’s only the words I’m interested in hearing. The cadence of how they sound and the beat and meaning they release to the reader.

Will the next person reading my words aloud understand exactly what I was trying to tell them?

Or will they need a soundtrack to feel the depth where I was dwelling when I wrote them down?

For the last two weeks my soundtracks have consisted of Joni Mitchell, The Drovers, Flogging Molly and The Lumineers. It was just this flavor of fairies dancing in the hidden flowers that grow above the rest of the world and only for those people that believe in them. It was a stubborn independence and the fearful exuberance that comes with doing the deeds that bring us the most confidence and joy.

It was that soundtrack I needed in order to get me out of the writing rut I have slept in for weeks now.

Today I needed something a little extra so I loaded in Fiona Apple, Alanis Morissette, Adele and Imagine Dragons.

That’s the best word I can give you to illustrate how I am feeling this morning as the words pound out to the page. It’s like nothing can stand in my way. I’m on the way now as I write the illuminated pages in my head again while I’m walking the supermarket aisle and folding the laundry.

There are things I still need to say to all of you.

“It comes back to you, it comes back to you
All the things that you had lost will find their way to you
It comes back to you, it comes back to you
Looking back into the past and I can see it through”

~Imagine Dragons
